Passenger Stations and Alternative Locations

Conceptual Rendering of Downtown (Steel Plaza) Passenger Station

A Passenger Station is the complex of buildings, services, patron access systems and the maglev "stopping station" that serves the maglev customer. As the central focus of the Passenger Station, the stopping station will typically include access to a multi-level parking garage; parking facilities for associated public transportation; customer amenities that may include shopping, auto service, rental car facilities and day care centers for those using the maglev system.

The Pennsylvania Project EIS team has recommended four Passenger Station locations including a split station at the Pittsburgh International Airport, Downtown Pittsburgh near Steel Plaza, Thompson Run in Penn Hills/Monroeville and at the intersection of 130/66 near Greensburg.

The Passenger Station will support Intermodal access to the maglev system from private automobile, public transit, taxi, limousine service, car rentals, and special airline interface at the airport location.

Alternative locations for the Passenger Station have been identified based on the ability to satisfy intermodal connectivity with other modes of transportation, ridership demand, community impacts, environmental impacts, public and local government comment.

The maglev transportation system is being designed, and will be installed and operated with passenger needs as the main criteria. Passenger convenience is the key to attracting and maintaining ridership and the economic viability of the maglev system.

It is envisioned that the building complex will encompass a variety of conveniences and time saving features for the traveler including a seamless connection with existing forms of transportation.
